United Steelworkers of America, Safety and Health Department records, 1937-1980.

This collection includes correspondence with companies and within the union, subject files on health and safety issues, and reports generated by OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration), NEP (the National Emphasis Program), and NIOSH (the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health). There are transcripts of various agency hearings, Department of Labor hearings, and informal public hearings on exposure to benzene and lead, numerous reports and reference materials on coke oven emissions, and documents pertaining to safe drinking water, excessive noise in the workplace, and exposure to arsenic. The bulk of the documents date from the 1970s.
